What to Wear to Dance Classes: A Complete Guide (2026)

what to wear to dance classes

Walking into your first dance class feels exciting right up until the moment you stand in front of the closet wondering, “Wait… what am I actually supposed to wear?”

Maybe your child is starting ballet for the first time, and you’re staring at a dozen different leotards online. Maybe you signed up for an adult tap class and suddenly feel unsure if leggings are appropriate. Or maybe you’re trying to avoid that universal first-class fear of showing up completely underdressed or wildly overdressed.

The good news? Dancewear doesn’t have to be complicated. At the end of the day, dance is about movement, comfort, and feeling confident enough to try something new. This guide will walk you through exactly what to wear for every dance class at Movement Haven so you can spend less time stressing about outfits and more time getting excited to dance.

What to Wear to Dance Class

Dance, for all ages, is about expression and fun. This comes easiest when dressed in the proper dress code for each style. For all the turns and twirls, make sure hair is secured and pinned away from the face. Dance is also an exercise, so proper footwear is a must. 3 Reasons Why Dancewear Matters

what to wear to ballet classes

From hip-hop to ballet, dancewear is chosen to highlight the different aspects of the style that make it, and the dancer, shine. It’s also a way for the dancer to feel their most comfortable, and guarantees the best quality training from the instructor.

#1: Movement and Safety

The primary function of dancewear is to enhance movement quality and the dancer's safety. Proper dance clothes allow teachers to see alignment and give any needed corrections. Additionally, wearing the right clothes prevents injury. You wouldn’t want to trip over sweats in ballet class!

#2: Confidence and Comfort

An additional benefit of proper dancewear is that dancers feel more comfortable. When dancers feel more comfortable, they move more freely. Proper attire is enough to change a dancer’s posture, make them feel like a part of the class culture, and boost their confidence.

#3: Learning and Technique

Proper attire supports dancers’ awareness of their bodies, which is essential for hitting precise movements and executing steps with greater ease. Proper attire also helps the instructor, as they can see dancers’ movements more clearly and suggest technical improvements with more accuracy.

General Dance Class Outfit Guidelines

Every style of dance has its own wardrobe needs, but ultimately, dancewear is about safety and comfort. For all styles, it’s best to keep accessories minimal and the hair pulled back to avoid distractions and safety risks.

What to Wear for Each Type of Dance Class

dance class attire

Attire for toddler dance classes doesn’t have to be complicated. The priority here is ease of movement and independence. All classes require a dress code of a leotard and tights along with the proper shoes for each class, ie: ballet, tap, and jazz.

A leotard and pink tights are the required dancewear for ballet class. Ballet shoes are always worn, and to keep from distractions and maintain clean movement, hair is shaped into a bun.

Jazz classes are all about fun, sass, and sharp movement. Dancers are required to wear a leotard, tights, and jazz shoes with their hair pulled back away from the face. Shorts or a skirt are welcome!

Dancers wear a leotard and tights but may also wear a baggy t-shirt and/or sweatpants. Footwear is a pair of hip-hop shoes or sneakers, preferably with good support and clean bottoms. This attire is best for helping the dancer get into the groove!

Tap dancers wear a leotard and tights and may wear shorts or a skirt. Tap shoes are a must!

Musical Theater Classes

Musical Theater is the class to learn about all things Broadway dance. Dancers wear a leotard and tights with jazz shoes and may choose to add a skirt or shorts.

For adult classes, comfortable activewear is likely all you need! The focus in dressing for these classes should be on movement, ease, and comfort. There isn’t any pressure to “look the part.” Everybody is there to learn!

Do You Need to Buy Dance Clothes Right Away?

You don’t need an endless amount of leotards from all the “best” brands! Simply start with what you have and upgrade your dancewear wardrobe over time. Our trial classes don’t require full dance attire, so there’s no pressure to have everything right from the start.

What to Bring to Dance Class

Dance is one of the most fun and freeing ways to work up a sweat, so always make sure to bring a water bottle. It’s also a good idea to come prepared with extra hair ties and bobby pins.

Your First Day of Dance Class

Everybody comes to class to learn! No one is expecting perfection on the first day. The teachers are there to guide every step and help along the way. The studio is a place focused on comfort and encouraging participation. It’s the perfect place to learn to trust yourself. Dance is exciting!
